3G vs 4G: What’s The Difference?

Mobile Broadband is the easiest way to get online.  You can do anything you want on a broadband which includes sending emails, surfing the web and of course, even streaming video and music wherever you are. The arrival of 4G services means that mobile broadband is now faster than what we experience before, making mobile networks an even better alternative to a landline connection.

What is 3G?

3G or “third generation”, is the third type of access technology that has been made widely available for connecting mobile phones. 3G services was first developed in the early years of the 21st century and was a major step forward in terms of reliability and coverage for voice calls and text messaging. 3G also provides faster access to the internet due to its capability of carrying larger amounts of data.

According to reports, the service allows download speeds of up to 7.2Mbps that  gives users the capacity to download an amount of data equal to a song per minute. In reality, actual experienced speeds are less than this. With the average download speed at around 3 Mbps.

The introduction of 3G led to the adoption of the term “mobile broadband”. This was the first time it became a realistic option to use the internet while on the move. For example, on a bus or as a passenger in a car, 3G is expected to be slower, but has the advantage of being more available.

4G and Beyond!

Even though 3G is still popular to most consumers, it is no longer the fastest or newest method of carrying mobile data because of 4G. However, while the coverage is now extensive, it’s still more limited than 3G and certain older and cheaper phones don’t support it.

4G is said to be capable of delivering mobile broadband speeds up to five times faster than 3G. Unfortunately, 4G networks are not available anywhere until now. Even if you have a 4G mobile broadband plan, you will probably be connected to 3G more often than 4G. Whether you’re not on a 4G contract, not in a 4G signal area or not using a phone which supports 4G you’ll be relying on 3G at least some of the time.
