How Red Velvet started out

Red Velvet started out as a quintet at first with the members being Irene, Seulgi, Wendy and Joy. They were formed by S.M. entertainment. They then added a fifth member, Yuri, in March of 2015. After their debut, all they had were praises and recognition from a lot of people which really contributed to their success.

Their first debut

As a quintet, they were announced in August 1, 2014. They digitally released their debut single, “Happiness” in August 4, 2014. A lot of critics described it as a Europop with a mix of synth and African tribal sounds. It’s original music video garnered 2 million views, which was immediately taken down due to its highly criticized background which may have triggered many people and replaced it with an edited version. Even after all that, “Happiness” was the second most viewed K-Pop music video for the month of August of that year.

The Entrance of Yuri

Yuri was announced to be a part of the group after almost a year, on March 11, 2015. They then released their mini-album named “Ice Cream Cake” on March 15, 2015 which was just 4 days after the announcement of Yuri’s entrance. after that, Red Velvet promoted their double lead singles, “Automatic” and “Ice Cream Cake”, with their music videos released on March 14 and March 15, respectively. They won their very first music show trophy on March 27 and their album went on to become the best-selling album by an all-girl group on the Hanteo Chart for the half of 2015.

These girls went through a lot first before they became stable and after Yuri came, everything became easy for them. If you haven’t heard of them yet, then you should check them out now because they got a lot to give!
