Nature is the source of amazing materials that we are using these days. We have wood that we can use for the paper to constructing houses, wool for insulation, or maybe skin which can repair itself automatically. All of these incredible materials have their own perfect application.
But is this generation where we have a challenge with having access to these natural materials, newer synthetic materials are what we rely on, like Kevlar. This is a plastic that is strong enough to stop bullets and knives. This is often described as five times stronger than steel on an equal weight basis.
What is Kevlar?
Kevlar is a modern material most people proud to be using these days. When you hear people say, “It’s made of Kevlar”, you know that it is made from the best material. Kevlar is a very strong plastic. There is a wide variety of synthetic plastics that are made by polymerization and these have different properties as well. Kevlar properties are the best because of its internal structure, and also because of how it was made into fibers that are knitted tightly together.
Kevlar is not similar to cotton. It is something that anyone can make out of the right raw materials. Its primary material is made by DuPont chemical company which results in two different varieties; Kevlar 29 and Kevlar 49. Kevlar is an example of synthetic aromatic polyamides or aramids. What Is So Good About Kevlar?
Kevlar is strong but surprising a very light material. The tensile strength of Kevlar 29 and Kevlar 49 is more than eight times than the tensile strength of a steel wire. Unlike other plastics, Kevlar does not melt. It can withstand and decompose at 450°C. It can also be ignited but the burning will stop when the heat source is removed. Very low temperatures will not affect Kevlar.
When Kevlar is exposed to UV light, it can discolor and some degradation of the fibers will occur. This material can resist any chemicals, so it can be exposed to strong acids or bases. According to studies, Kevlar can be exposed to hot water for more than 200 days. It is very strong with its “virtually unaffected” properties by moisture.
Despite all the good things that Kevlar provides, it also has its drawbacks. It may have a very high tensile strength, but it has a poor compressive strength. This is the reason why even though this is as strong as steel, it is not used as a primary building material for buildings and bridges where comprehensive forces are important even though.
